The turn of the new year means one thing on the Jiu Jitsu calendar - the IBJJF European Championships.

Once again, early January saw some of the biggest names in the sport descend upon Lisbon to compete for one of the major titles on the IBJJF calendar.

For many of the athletes, it’s the perfect opportunity to showcase their abilities against other high level practitioners and set down a marker for the year. For others, it’s simply an opportunity to compete on a big stage with a fevered atmosphere. With over a thousand sign ups across all belt ranks and seven days of relentless competition - Lisbon 2020 proved to be one to remember.

As always, the brown and black belts competed over the weekend to the most intrigue. We at Tatami are proud to be represented by a number of high level athletes and followed their progress. This year we had a large contingent of sponsored athletes show up to Lisbon to compete with a high level of success.

There were medals for Taylor Pearman (brown), Rita Tana, Leoni Munslow, Charlie MacDonald, Jamie Hughes (all Black Masters) and Venla Luukonen.

A special mention goes out to the legend Vitor ‘Shaolin’ Ribeiro for securing Gold in his Black Masters division and to Tommy Langaker, who won a maiden European title by dominating the middleweight division and securing his place as one of the best black belts on the planet.
