Just under 10 years ago, in September 2008, we commissioned our first Gi samples – thus beginning the Tatami Fightwear journey.

In just a short space of time, Tatami Fightwear has grown into one of the biggest worldwide brands of Jiu Jitsu clothing and equipment with supporters all around the world. We are proud to share this timeline with the rapid growth of popularity and participation with the sport as a whole as people from all corners of the globe embark on their own Jiu Jitsu journey.

The goal of Tatami Fightwear was to support the growth of the sport while simultaneously providing athletes with affordable and high-quality training equipment.

While Tatami Fightwear has now become synonymous with some of the biggest competitions and most lucrative invitationals in the calendar, the first competition we attended was the Copa De Catulña in Barcelona in 2008. In the years that have followed, we have seen rapid growth in the participation and public interest and thousands now turn up to watch and compete in competitions across the world.

The lifeblood of the sport lies in those who give their time and energy dedicating themselves to mastering it and we at Tatami have always prided ourselves on supporting these people. The first athlete we sponsored was Joao Santos of Gracie Lisboa and we now boast a host of athletes that represent Tatami Fightwear that include UFC fighters, Jiu Jitsu world champions and pioneers of the sport.

What really put Tatami Fightwear on the map was sponsoring Fernando ‘Terere’ Augusto in his return to competition in 2011. Our mini-documentary ‘Return of a Champion’ garnered significant ttention and accurately summed up what we want Tatami Fightwear to stand for.

Jiu Jitsu as a sport is continuing to trend upwards and as more and more people take to the mat – whether it is to compete, get fitter or just learn a new skill – we can’t wait to be there along the way.
